Waynesboro beats #1 Vienna

In the first game of an exhibition double header the Waynesboro Generals came out on top, defeating the number one ranked team in the nation Vienna Senators 1-0 in ten innings.

The Senators were ranked number one team in the nation for the second week in a row according to PGCrosscheckers.com

Last weeks rankings also included the top two teams in the Valley League' Luray Wranglers (23-10) came in at #5, and the Generals (23-10) at #11.

The exhibition was a battle of minimal hitting, great defense, highlighted with outstanding pitching.

Nine innings was not enough as this one headed into extra innings knotted up at 0-0.

In the bottom of the tenth Austin Morgan led off with a single -- his third hit of the day -- and was taken out in favor of pinch runner Michael Parker. Greg Meleski was able to advance Parker on a fielders choice 'swinging bunt,' down the first base line. Chris Enourato struck out swinging for the second out of the inning.

Generals manager Lawerence Nesselrodt opted to pinch-hit Derek Hamblen for right-fielder Ryan Danbury who was hitless on the day.

Hamblen arguably the hottest Generals hitter as of lately has seen his average jump nearly 70 points in the last two weeks and is now third on the team with a .308 average.

With a smirk on his face and a hop in his step the joyful Belmont Bruin stepped into the box and stirred up friendly conversation with Senator catcher Chris Haney.

The first pitch from closer Eric Cantrell was a fast ball chin high, that's all Hamblen would need. Smirk still blaring -- Hamblen crushed the ball to deep left center -- out of reach for any Senator outfielder.

As the ball bounced off the top of the Fence, Parker came home to score from second and the Generals stunned the collegiate summer world with a walk off 1-0 victory.

The second game of the doubleheader set between fifth ranked Luray and Vienna is scheduled to play at 7:30, the game results can be found on the Valley League's website tomorrow.

Waynesboro will not get a day off, their next game is scheduled for tomorrow against inter-division rival Staunton Braves -- the only team Waynesboro has not beat this season -- in Staunton, the game will start at 7:30 p.m.
